Windows Mobile 6.5 SDK pulled

The Windows Mobile 6.5 software development kit, which was posted January 22, has been pulled. If one goes to the URL where the software was residing one will only get an error screen. It is not known why Microsoft pulled the SDK but it is thought that it could be because the download included the Windows Mobile 6.5.3 bits.

Windows Mobile 6.5 users are surfing the web more

October saw the debut of Windows Mobile 6.5, yet there were many different views from consumers and tech journalists who expected more from the software giant. The operation system has proven its self in the months that followed its debut. Research from Net Application's Market Share says that users of Windows Mobile 6.5 are surfing the net more. And this is not some dinky rise in numbers, this is 50% and more increase. This increase has only been beaten by the Android, which saw a 66% increase. This rise has been thought to come from the fact that Windows Mobile devices are gearing towards making web surfing more pleasurable with larger screens. HTC HD2 smokes other phones with its 4.3 inch display. The AT&T Fuze only has a 2.8 inch and Pro2, Tilt2, Imagio, and Samsung Omnia II are only around 3.6 inch display. Help for HD video on WM6.5 is on the way

It has been speculated that neither the hardware OEM (HTC) nor the chipmaker (Qualcomm’s Snapdragon) inside the HD2 has been able to overcome the limitation of WM to decode HD video for smooth playback. This issue may go away once WM gets an upgraded to run on Windows CE 6 core but until then it seems that we might be able to thank Qualcomm for stepping up to the plate and solving this issue as there has been sightings of job posting for developers on LinkedIn to help solve the decoding issue.

Android – not that hot in Western Europe yet

Despite the mobile phone market rising for the first time in 15 month within Western Europe the Android operating system is not proving to be as strong and popular as other places on the globe. While operators tried to push smartphones utilizing the Android operating system in Western Europe a bit harder, IDC reported that consumers balked and showed little interest in the devices. A modest growth from 4.2 percent in July-September to 5.4 was all that was seen in market share of smartphones running the Android OS.
