Apple Warned Handset Makers of Future Lawsuits, Says Analyst

According to recent reports, Apple warned various handset makers before issuing its patent infringement charges on Taiwanese handset maker HTC. Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner divulged some interesting insight, as first reported by Fortune, into the patent suits Apple filed last week. Reiner claims that, starting in January of 2009, Apple held a series of “top-secret” discussions with tier-1 handset makers to make them aware just how unhappy it was with the iPhone IP infringements. Reiner says the pending lawsuit filed against HTC was Apple's way of putting a “lawyered-up exclamation point on a series of blunt conversations” that had been occurring for some time now. Apple is definitely making the proverbial “example” out of HTC.

HTC Eris users will not be receiving Android 2.1, yet they can get small updates for the signal indicator from Big Red. The new update is to ROM 1.17.605.1/ Radio 2.32.40.11.09, and fixes the rare problem that some have with the display where the locked screen appears to be out of usage and when attempted to wake-up the Eris from screen saver mode, the phone still remains inactive. HTC Droid Eris is getting updated form Verizon and it is not to either Android 2.0 or 2.1. The new boot ROM and radio software will instead be only fixing some minor performance issues on the device. A few owners of the Droid Eris should have started to see their phones being updated at midnight December 9. The Droid Eris will now run ROM version 1.16.605.1 and radio software version 2.32.40.11.09.
