Windows Mobile 7 will be a free download for HTC HD2; but when

A HTC customer, within a thread, when asking about the Windows Mobile 7 upgrade path for an HD2 received the following response from HTC:
Thank you for your enquiry about HD2
Clearly there are two gems to extract from this response from HTC:

I wouldn't put too much trust into the HTC support team. I asked why i couldn't download a ROM update and was told it wasn't needed in the UK so i couldn't download it. I later realised that i was putting an O rather than a 0 in the serial number so the support member was obviously lying. This response might have been said just to end the matter and reduce the work load.

I think we have to wait for MS announcement at MWC next month regarding WM7. At the event they should also state when it will be available and on which of the existing devices, if any. Because WM7's availability for the HD2 has been confirmed and retracted a few times, also there is growing speculation about its release date. So i guess we have to wait a month from now to find answers to these questions from MS itself. Until then its all rumors.

I wonder if there is any way that someone could get a good answer from Microsoft because they are the only ones that really know when WM 7 is going to be released. I personally do not see how it could be put off that long. When the HTC support representative gave out that indication, I don’t believe it was to be taken literally as a matter of fact. He brought up Windows Mobile 6.5 and then based his Windows Mobile 7 release estimate on that. That reduces the validity of the statement to near zero. Just because Windows Mobile 6.5 was just released doesn’t indicate anything about Windows Mobile 7. The truth is Windows Mobile 6.5 was no design feat; they simply ported a few Zune GUIs to Windows Mobile 6 and called it a half day, (the first half of the day was spent turning WM5 into WM6), figuratively speaking. Microsoft really had no intention of making Windows Mobile 6.5 a major upgrade to their operating system. They had been working on Windows Mobile 7 even before the release of WM 6.5! I remember seeing some images of Windows Mobile 7 that were posted one (1) full year ago! What do you think is happening with all that gesture work?, one might inquire, are the teams from Zune HD and Windows 7 working together with the mobile developers to coordinate their touch interface products? Probably; and I’m sure they have hit some snags here and there but, they have to be ready soon, they just have to be. The Mobile Expo this February should be the day we hear a time frame for this to come to pass and maybe even some demonstrations of their work. Someone in the industry should help shed some light on this subject and ask Microsoft those tough questions at the expo.

Hey, we've all seen the new WM 28xxx builds coming out here & at XDA. This, imho, will be the next upgrade. We've all been unofficially calling it WM 6.5.3. I bet you anything this will be the next interim release to pad out WM6 until the release of WM7 in early 2011.
