As smartphone sales surged by 13% in the third quarter one would think that this increased sales would necessarily be seen by such a powerhouse as the Windows Mobile operating system supported smartphones. Well, that just wasn’t the case as the sale of smartphones that are running the Windows Mobile operating system actually decreased by 20% in the third quarter according to Gartner.
Was it the disheartening release of Windows Mobile 7, the bad press around Windows Mobile 6.5, or maybe the expected release dates of Android? It has been suggested that the real culprit here is the late release date of Windows Mobile 6.5 which began in October. Just too late to stronghold / swing the market in its favor.
As Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer openly criticized Windows Mobile in late September, saying that Microsoft had "screwed up with Windows Mobile." It seems many agree.
