Is Windows Mobile becoming the new Vista?

Htcpedia news:

Is Windows Mobile becoming the new Vista?

With recent announcements that Windows Mobile has fallen significantly as the operating system of choice for Smartphones one might wonder if Microsoft can do anything to put this product back on track.

Very simple we can clearly see that a few things went wrong for Windows Mobile:

  • Repeated delays in the release schedule has frustrated partners
  • The ever popular Android devices have been generating a lot of buz
  • A lot of people are just asking for iPhones and BlackBerrys

Clearly the pressure is on Microsoft to produce with Windows Mobile 7 but many are concerned that it too is overly heavy and bloated with complex features that might create doom and gloom as was with Vista.

So the question becomes: with the release date of Windows Mobile 7 expected in the spring of 2010, can Microsoft create something again that will capture the hearts of the smartphone industry? I will say it has a lot to look at (iPhone, BlackBerry, Android) to potentially make a super product. The problem lies in their ability to modify development efforts and address what they have seen happen in the industry thus far. But might speculate that, with the hush hush of systems such as Android, Microsoft might not have the time to implement something compatible without creating another monolithic catastrophe.

I don't understand why everyone hates Vista so much - are you just agreeing with what the technophobic media say? I've found Vista to be the most stable, secure, fast, and easy-to-use OS ever made by Microsoft (excluding Windows 7, which I can't say anything about as I haven't used it yet). Underneath the surface, Windows 7 is still very similar to Vista. Windows Mobile is similarly unfairly and inexplicably abused - it is still the most feature-rich mobile OS, and one of only two that have apps for pretty much everything. Coupled with HTC's modifications, it's just as easy to use as iPhone OS and Android. All Windows Mobile needs is an image refresh, like Windows - that should be what WM7 provides.

g400... I completely agree.
blacksage... if it weren't for your wall of text, I'd probably agree with what you said too.

People underestimate WM because it doesn't look good (which happens to be opposite of Vista's supposed "problems"). They also seem to think of WM less because manufacturers like HTC and small developers do a lot to make WM look (and perform) better. I would rather have a completely functional OS, like WM, and add whatever I want afterwards.

I agree with g400, most people that claim vista is a failure aren't running the OS due to the previous claims by other people that aren't running Vista. Its like one big rumor that is unfounded. I agree with g400 in most areas. Most people that claim Vista is a failure aren't running the OS due to the previous claims by other people that aren't running Vista. It’s like one big rotating rumor that is unfounded. I have used all Microsoft operating systems, Apple OS, Androids, Blackberries and the iPhone among others. The truth is they all fail to reach the perfect perch they claim to be on. Either they lack features or they crash. I have been more frustrated by the road blocks set up by the alternative OSs than even Windows Mobile. Everyone that says Vista and Windows Mobile crashes; their right, so does everything else, some do better than others. Vista is much better than XP in pretty much every aspect unless you are running on slightly older hardware. The same is true for Windows Mobile and the other fancy Overlay GUIs that exist; they require hardware power to drive software. Microsoft has undoubtedly drug the Windows Mobile project on and on for so long, their slight aesthetic changes are techno-decades overdue and the CEO of Microsoft said himself, that he is disappointed with the slow moving, underperforming Windows Mobile Project. The project leader should have fired and hired several people by now, and maybe fired them self to get the job done right and for all we know they could have. It is well known that Microsoft’s Windows Mobile and some other software that has been written was done so in such a way that it may be considered a little inefficient. The software requires more hardware power than other comparable OSs. This is in part why Microsoft has been unable to present a reasonably complete upgrade for Windows Mobile as it well should have by now. I hope that they are dumping every last resource they have to complete this project in a timely fashion, and finally bring something that they can be proud of when comparing against other OSs. As it is now, people are so impatient that they put a great deal of development into disguises for Windows Mobile. That is just sad; they need to have a proper OS that works well enough by itself and looks and functions well and easy enough by itself without a cover up. Right now, Apple’s iPhone 3Gs may be perceived to perform better than Windows Mobile, and to look better too. It may be easier to use as well, this is all based on individual tastes and may be true or untrue. Windows Mobile has been cheaper to own for me, and also has more complete control in my opinion. There are tradeoffs for everything we look at. Take good advice and don’t let dumb people tell you which technology is better, go play with it and see for yourself. Realize that technologically savvy people are able to give much better advice about technology than the “well rounded” trustworthy people on TV. Also watch that you understand the suggestion that was given, if you don’t, ask a question or step back and take a look at a more simple approach, don’t just take the easy road out every time and accept a easier technology that does less. And let’s face it, not everyone should be carrying a Windows Mobile phone; we need choices to occupy our taste. And Microsoft will need to shake off the negative feedback from nonusers and users alike if they are to do well. Any company that wants to succeed will have to have more than just a pretty OS. They will also need to continue to develop and to re-engage into newer and better relationships with hardware manufacturers and service providers if they are to do well. People have gotten a little too spoiled when it comes to learning new technologies. They figure it should just read their mind and they needn’t worry about a thing. Well, observe this: Each and every piece of techno goodie we get to hold has been programmed to do exactly and precisely and only what the programmer programmed it to do. If they programmed a mistake, then that’s what we get, a mistake. If they programmed to their taste and several others but not yours, then we get something that’s not to your taste. Yes, the ultimate goal is to program the software so that there is no need for a manual and even beginners can learn quickly the functions of the technology in hand, but, don’t hold your breath, that day may never come, and I have to say, it may just be me, but, I enjoy learning new things. Stop making it out to be such a burden. Ever heard of the nut behind the keyboard that keeps mucking up the computer? It’s the user; they aren’t inputting the correct information in the correct fashion to get the computer to do what they want. At the current time, we needn’t look forward to gadgets that read our mind; we still have to be the director, even as the casual user. I wish I had a good opportunity to voice my opinion to the folks who need to hear it most but, it helps to know somebody may feel my pain and may share my opinion. What we do get to look forward to is some upcoming devices that seem to be a breakthrough in hardware capability (HTC HD2 in sight) and if Microsoft does what they say they will do, IMMEDIATELY, (with Windows Mobile 7), then they will continue to be a top contender for smart phones and we should have a Windows Mobile phone that we can be more proud of hopefully before too long.

I have to apologize for that wall of text, it looked different on my word program and I tend to ramble..... a lot. And the first post without the whole thing, it was a malfunction, sorry for that too, but, I just had to get all that out somewhere; mainly brought on in my intense anticipation of Windows Mobile 7 and upcoming new hardware devices and the endless supply of Vista failure rumors and my personal vendetta against people that expect too much from their technology and think it should read their minds. I hope it has not been entirely inappropriate; I tried to be as objective, detailed and relative as possible.
