Apple Warned Handset Makers of Future Lawsuits, Says Analyst

According to recent reports, Apple warned various handset makers before issuing its patent infringement charges on Taiwanese handset maker HTC. Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner divulged some interesting insight, as first reported by Fortune, into the patent suits Apple filed last week. Reiner claims that, starting in January of 2009, Apple held a series of “top-secret” discussions with tier-1 handset makers to make them aware just how unhappy it was with the iPhone IP infringements.  Reiner says the pending lawsuit filed against HTC was Apple's way of putting a “lawyered-up exclamation point on a series of blunt conversations” that had been occurring for some time now. Apple is definitely making the proverbial “example” out of HTC.

"Our checks also suggest that these warning shots are meaningfully disrupting the development roadmaps for would-be iPhone killers,” says Reiner. “Rival software and hardware teams are going back to the drawing board to look for work-arounds. Lawyers are redoubling efforts to gauge potential defensive and offensive responses. And strategy teams are working to chart OS strategies that are better hedged."

Apple COO Tim Cook did mention at the beginning of this all that companies who try to reproduce the iPhone’s UI will be taken down by “whatever weapons we have at our disposal.” You’d think that’d make it pretty clear to handset manufacturers—and for some it did. Samsung and LG strayed away from implementing multi-touch functionality in its handsets. Reiner says the real problems arose with the Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris—both featuring an extremely similar “user experience” to the iPhone—in late 2009. The major focus of the Motorola Droid campaign was to bash the seemingly frivolous iPhone—so then why sue HTC? Reiner says because there was enough corporate distance between the two companies to safely attack its main target—yep you guessed it—Google.

Reiner does admit he believes this is a blood-war between Apple and Google and that HTC was a chosen target because it helped Google manufacture the Nexus One smartphone.  "It's too early to know how Apple's legal action against HTC will ultimately play out, or whether Apple will have the appetite to launch additional battles with other OEMs,” says Reiner. “But in the near term, Apple's legal actions appear to have temporarily left competitors playing catch-up with their shoelaces tied."

I wonder if Apple is planning to sue individuals who do NOT buy an IPhone?

microsoft should have patented having an operating system that runs on computers,
nokia should have patented downloading apps on phones,

Damn!!! This just makes me mad + sad... :( If apple tries to strip us from our great WinMo and Android phones, then its gonna be bad!! -- I dont even want a Iphone - only thing I like about it is its gaming abilities- everything else about it sucks... - my friends Iphone cant even find my HTC Touch HD through Bluetooth - thats bullshit- we cant even send files to each other...
what will be next... - maybe Apple will make somekinda stupid program/virus which will upload mac osx (iphone UI) to our HTC phones, so we would be like Apple slaves?? :D :D
In short - Apple sucks + it sucks even more, because of trying to sue HTC :D

Jobs is just made because every empire he built, somebody (Gates, Google, HTC) have built a bigger better empire...He just wants to get on top! The Iphone SUCKS since droid has arrived! He is scared people will jump ship! and then to top it off he sells the Iphone to AT&T...What a MORON!!! but also glad he didnt get a chance or rather Verizon didn't take a risk and sell a SH*tty phone!!!

@ Kristaps-K9-Lv: I agree they are making them selves look worst trying to sue HTC!!! HTC was one of the first to market a smart phone, so hopefully they have a few patents of their sleeves!!! GO HTC AND GOOGLE!!! Chop that sour tastes like sh*t apple tree down!!!
