Over the past month, I have been reading page after page saying that HTC's 4th quarter earnings report shows the company sliding. One site said that HTC was going to fade away. Really? Are we sure that we are talking about the same company? Lets see... HTC started in 1997. That is right, 15 years! In those 15 years they have led the way in many aspects of the mobile community. They were one of the first to bring us touch screen hand held devices. They made us the first Microsoft smartphone, Microsoft 3G phone, and the Palm Treo 650. Then in 2008, HTC introduced the first Android powered smartphone. Thank you HTC. Then came the patent wars. There is no evil republic or rebel alliance but it is still entertaining. In 2010 HTC put out the EVO 4G. The first 4G smartphone in the US. The company was ranked 31st most innovative company in the world. By the end of 2010, HTC sold over 24 million devices. That brings us to 2011. HTC went shopping. They bought up 51% of Beats Electronics, got a stake in S3 Graphics and took over Dashwire. In February 2011 HTC was named Device Manufacturer of the Year at the Mobile World Congress and by the 3rd quarter, HTC became the largest US smartphone vendor, beating Samsung, Apple, and Blackberry. After reading all this information, you can see that the 4th quarter slide was small potatoes compared to the big picture. Now with HTC's new outlook (Hero Devices), and division (Studio), they should be able to stay in line with or even surpass the competition.
