Noob need ROM help

Hi
Since i am quite a noob when i comes to hacking phones i turn to you for a bit of help here and i hope that somebody have time for me
I have a HTC touch HD and i want to put on a custom rom, and since i have heard a lot of good things about Duttys rom i want to try that out.
So here are a few questions.
1 I have read that you must know what SPL that is on your phone and i have read that you get that information by putting it in bootloader mode, is that correct?
2 I have two PC one with windows 7 and one with XP, but i have read that when flashing a phone with a windows 7 or vista you have to update your HTC sync driver on your pc, is that correct? Should i use the XP pc instead?
3 After reading dozens of forum threads i have found out that HSPL is better and easier than USPL, is that true?
4 What files do i need to download in order to make it work. Since i am a noob i would be very happy if anyone could tell me me things like the name and the version of the files too.

Look at the first thread at the top, the sticky one. It gives you step by step instructions on how to flash a custom ROM.

Ok i have read that guide but i still dont know what version of Duttys Rom i am supposed to download, i guess there are a lot of different ones.

Just browse through the various ROM threads and pick one you like
