Our Opinion

The Case-Mate Tough Case for the HTC One offers low levels of dual-layer protection, but is very easy to use. It also offers good grip and an unusually soft silicone layer. If you're looking for higher levels of protection, this just isn't the one for you.

Review: Case-Mate Tough Case for the HTC One

Choosing the right dual-layer case can be more difficult than choosing the right single-layer case. The Case-Mate Tough Case for the HTC One tries to make the choice simpler by offering protection coupled with a user-friendly experience. Unlike many other dual-layer cases, the Tough Case is one of the easiest dual-layer cases to handle when it comes to separating layers and placing the phone in the case. Of course, everyone knows there is more to a case than that.

As you can see, the first layer of the Tough Case is soft silicone. The silicone is actually unusually soft in the best way possible, making it one of the most pleasing silicone layers to handle. That may sound odd, but it's true. The silicone is placed in the hard shell so easily that it practically just falls into place. This acts as both a pro and a con because you get the feeling that it's not altogether stable. There are cases that do a better job of keep the two layers together, but often those are slightly more annoying to deal with.

Arguably the "make-it-or-break-it" part of the Tough Case is the hard shell. The hard shell has a slightly rough, textured feel to it. It's not overt, but it's enough that some people are just going to dislike holding it. On the other hand, it does provide a certain level of grip, so that's something to keep in mind. Altogether the Tough Case is a slim dual-layer case, and neither piece offers serious levels of protection. This would fall on the low-end of dual-layer cases, so it's not something to throw around. The Tough Case has cut-outs for everything.

All in all the Case-Mate Tough Case for the HTC One offers something of a compromise in that it doesn't offer the greatest level of protection, but it's very easy to handle and both layers have their defining characteristics. The textured back has good grip, but it's also going to drive some people up a wall. If style and ease-of-use is your thing, the Case-Mate Tough Case for the HTC One is a good bet. For everyone else, move on.

Just a tip, I think the larger opening around the camera below its lens is intentionally done for another HTC One variant so it works with all the HTC One models that come out.

This isn't the first case to have that larger opening (which at first didn't make any sense until the one from China was announced and has its IR blaster on the back below the camera.

It makes me wonder if another US model is on the way that has this same design, which would mean a microSD port. Could be the Verizon model, a reason why it wasn't available at launch because Verizon would get an exclusive one? Its all speculation but the larger opening is definitely because of the Chinese variants design.
